(Wadhurst Clay) - 2002
At Petts Level, the Wadhurst Clay forms most of the cliff formation. The Wadhurst Clay itself is split into Shale and Clay and the Cliff End Sandstone. Approximately 70% of the cliff here is of the Cliff End Sandstone and within this layer is the 'Cliff End Bone Bed' which contains a high number of fish remains and other fossils. At the top of Pett Level, there is a small amount of glacial sediment from a drift deposit.
At Fairlight Cove there is a major fault which is why the sea has rapidly eroded the cliff here, the Wadhurst Clay suddenly stops and is followed by the Ashdown Formation (Sandstone and below beach level, the Ashdown Formation (Fairlight Clay). This then continues West.

(Ashdown formation, fairlight clay, similar to that of the Wealden from the IOW) - 2002
